Unlike a lot fruit Gooseberries tolerate the shade so can be planted in north and east facing locations. Dig a hole twice the diameter of the root-ball and mix a general fertiliser with the infill soil. Water regularly until established. Pot grown plants can be planted all year round but establish best in autumn and spring. Plant 1m (3ft) apart in rows 1.2m (3ft) apart.
Fruit is produced on the previous year’s growth and older shoots. Create a framework of 8-10 branches. Each Winter from year 3 shorten main shoots by one-half. Remove any thin stems that looks like it won’t support the weight of fruit. Apply a general fertiliser in Spring
A superb variety – very hardy and vigorous mid-season red gooseberry. Hinnonmaki Red reliably produces heavy crops of large, sweet, red berries of excellent quality. It was specifically bred in Finland for hardiness and disease resistance and is particularly resistant to mildew making it ideal for organic growing. It is also a strong but slow growing variety so is ideal for small gardens. An excellent variety for dessert or culinary purposes. Eventual height and spread: 1m (3ft).

*Bareroot – November to March is the ideal time to plant bare-root plants. These are plants that have been grown in open ground, then dug up for dispatch and planting during the dormant season. They are called ‘bare-root’ plants as they are supplied with no soil around their roots. They will come packed in damp compost to stop the roots drying out and should be planted as soon as possible. As long as the compost is kept damp planting can be delayed for a few weeks if necessary.
