Potato Days

During January and February we run a series of eight potato days in Northwest England

Dates for all the events can be found under the Events tab above

What is a potato day? – It’s not all about potatoes!

For those with a love for growing potatoes a potato day is the beginning of their growing season. Potato days, as the name suggests, are events where you can buy seed potatoes and with 80-100 varieties to choose from, it is easy to spend longer than you ever thought you could looking at potatoes! It’s not just about potatoes. The event could equally be called an ‘Allotment Day’, as we cater for all your growing needs, from Asparagus to Zucchini (courgette) and everything in between.

Potato days are generally held in village halls, although the Skelmersdale event is held in the middle of a shopping centre which makes it a bit novel. We usually work with a local allotment association, growing group or community group who are responsible for the local advertising. They help Brighter Blooms throughout the day from set up, to serving customers and packing away. In return for this we make a donation to their organisation. The potatoes, which are packed in 1kg nets, are laid out in crates on tables in the hall; they are split up into first earlies, second earlies and main crop varieties to make it easier to find what you’re looking for. We usually have a selection of organically grown potato varieties as well.  All the varieties have a description label and a picture on them to help you decide which ones to grow this year.

Brighter Blooms and the local volunteers are always on hand to offer advice and suggestions, whether you’re new to growing or even if you’re not and looking for something different to try.

The potatoes are the main event but we have much, much more to tempt you. All the products on this website will be available to buy on the day.  They include onion sets, shallots and garlic. Fruit bushes including; Black, Red and White Currants, Gooseberries, Blackberries, Raspberries and Blueberries.

Vegetable Seeds

We have a large range of vegetable seeds all at £1.50 packet. The seed is all packed in quantities to provide the right amount for the average allotment grower.

We work in partnership with the local growing charity Let’s Grow Preston.

At our onsite events we fundraise for Rosemere Cancer Foundation and Motivation Romania.
